M4-1: "Mah Jongg Clinic - Beginners"

January 8, 2018  |  12:15-3:15 pm

Description: In the very earliest known writings about the game (the 1890s), it was not called “Mah Jongg” by the Chinese who played it. When Joseph Park Babcock undertook to introduce the game to the US in 1920, he decided that it would be beneficial to give the game a name that he could trademark. Babcock decided to call the game Mah-Jongg based on mah que - the Chinese name for the game. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, calculation and involves a degree of chance. The game is played with 4 players and a set of 152 tiles resembling dominoes bearing various designs based on Chinese characters and symbols. These tiles are drawn and discarded until one player wins with a hand of 14 tiles. In this clinic, participants will learn the basic rules and basic strategies to play this game of Chinese origin. For this 8 week, progressive course participants must register for one of the first two weeks. You must attend one of the first two clinics to learn the basics in order to participate in the guided play portion of this clinic. The first two clinics will be instructional and will cover basics and strategies. The last 6 sessions will be guided play with other participants.
