S16: "Stories from an NFL Replay Official"

January 26, 2018 - 9:30-11:30 am

Description: The NFL’s instant replay debate has been a hot-button issue since the games were first regularly televised in the late 1940s. Traditionalists, hesitant to interfere with the purity of the game by removing human error, clashed with those eager to embrace technology and all that it offered the game. From a stopwatch, walkie-talkie and video camera to today’s sophisticated technology, instant replay has certainly come a long way. Initially, the replay official monitored the game feed from an in-stadium booth and initiated all reviews only reversing a call with “indisputable visual evidence.” The league eventually went away from the old version of replay officials in skyboxes and gave referees the authority to review plays on the field inside a booth equipped with monitors. Needless to say, the officials behind the replay system have lots of stories to tell. Join Al Hynes as he recounts some of his interesting experiences from his distinguished career as an NFL replay official.
