H2 Alzheimer’s Dementia and other Neurodegenerative Diseases
March 5, 2019 - 10:00-12:00 pm
Description: Neurodegenerative disease is an umbrella term for a range of conditions which primarily affect the neurons in the human brain. Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. Neurons normally don’t reproduce or replace themselves, so when they become damaged or die they are not easily replaced by the body. Examples of neurodegenerative diseases include Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease. Dementias are responsible for the greatest burden of neurodegenerative diseases, with Alzheimer’s representing approximately 60-70% of dementia cases. Alzheimer’s dementia now appears to be the third leading cause of death in developing countries behind cardiovascular disease and cancer. What exactly is Alzheimer’s and what causes this disease? What are the symptoms and how is it treated? Is there anything we can do to prevent, slow or reverse its onset?
Purpose: Learn about Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases
Facilitator: Dr. Salvatore Lacagnina (Guest Presenter, Lee Health)
