G10: Ukraine Update - A Panel Discussion

Event Date: Thursday, January 12, 2023
Event Time: 2:00 pm
Event End Time: 4:00 pm
Event Category / Group: iLife / Fitness & Activities
Event Location: FineMark Bank

Russia's massive assault on an independent Ukraine menaces the Eastern flank of NATO, the US post-World War II security architecture, and fundamental tenets of international law. The effects are felt across the globe, raising concerns about where Russia's next offensive will be, possibly going into the territory of a NATO member state and triggering article 5 ('all for one').

Moderated by Mo Winograd, the discussion will address four major areas:

The historical context, because Russia-Ukraine tensions go back across centuries, not decades.
Ukarine's weapons and battlespace
The lurking danger of escalation into the battlefield use of nuclear weapons, or worse; and
the role of diplomacy in defining pathways toward a durable peace.

The first bloc is titled Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Steve Vesce (via remote link).

The second bloc is titled Thoughts on Ukraine weapons and battlespace by John Rittenhouse.

The third bloc is titled A Whiff of Plutonium by Peter Borré.

The fourth bloc is titled Pathways Towards Peace by Alan Van Egmond.

Each bloc will be approximately 40 minutes each with accompanying Q&As. Attendees will have ample opportunity to interact with presenters, contribute to the discussion and express their views. Regrettably, some important topics will not get the focus they deserve:

Putin's war crimes against the people of Ukraine;
The resilience of the Ukrainian people;
Russia's squeeze on EU natural gas supplies; and
The future of the Russian Federation: demographic decline, brain drain, and economic stagnation.

Purpose: Learn more about the Russo-Ukraine war
